ケニー・ロジャーズは、知的で、頑固で、有名でも金持ちでもないけど人生に自信があって、揺るぎない大人のイメージがありました。当時からそんな風にカッコいい大人で、自分もいつかあんなオヤジになりたいと思っていました。
この曲ではケニーがいまは落ちぶれたギャンブラーになって、夜行列車でたまたま同席した若者（この若者も人生に迷っている時期なのでしょう）に、そのウイスキーをひとくちくれればアドバイスしてあげるよ…と声をかけるのです。
そのアドバイスは、おおむね退屈な年寄りのたわごとなのですが、それに意味を見出すのもこちらの勝手。何かがカチリと音を立てるのが聞こえるようです。素晴らしい人生応援歌。私もこんなふうに意味ありげな言葉で若者にくだを巻きたい。
